Weight loss & weight management Workshops

The Power of Food for Healthy Weight Management

A vegan diet of whole grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits can help prevent diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “Appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.”

This curriculum is based on the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine’s successful 21-Day Vegan Kickstart program. Depending on one’s perspective, this program is about losing weight, maintaining a healthy weight, or simply embracing an overall healthful diet. Much of the basis of this program is about making a qualitative shift in the way we eat as opposed to a quantitative shift. For some people, it’s the first time the idea of not restricting amounts of foods but rather choosing the right foods has been the guiding principle for losing weight and staying healthy. The revelation is bolstered with clinical benefits such as lower cholesterol, better diabetes control, and lower blood pressure, as well as improvements in energy and mood.

As a Food For Life certified center we host the Healthy Weight Management program which entails 8 workshops/classes which provide in-depth review of plant-based nutrition for diabetes prevention and treatment.

Class 1 is free. Classes 2 through 7 is $40 per person. Alternatively purchase all 7 classes at a discounted rate of $250. Please register online on our Meet Up page; there you will find the link to purchase your ticket online.

Class 1: Introduction: The Power of Your Plate - Kickstart Program

The first class in this 7 workshop series will focus on getting ready to start a low-fat, plant-based diet. A week or more prior to class consider what this diet entails, what groceries to purchase, and what a healthful menu will look like (we can help, just give us a call 703-430-8883). When you leave this class, you should consider the next seven days as a week for preparation, and then after Class 2, you can jump into the diet.

Next Class: TBD | Prerequisite: None

Class 2: Let’s Go!

After a week of preparation and today’s lesson, you will have all the tools needed to start a low-fat, plant-based diet for the next three weeks (21-Day Kickstart). We will spend time with everyone to gauge progress on how their preparatory week of food shopping and meal planning went. And encourage each other to share our successes and challenges.

Next Class: TBD | Prerequisite: Class 1

Class 4: Breaking the Food Seduction

This workshop will go over why certain foods (i.e. cheese), and not broccoli, seem addictive and what we can do to break those addictions. Be sure to send them away prepared for their third and final week of the Kickstart program.

Next Class: TBD | Prerequisite: Classes 1, 2 and 3

Class 6: Digestive Health

During this class you will learn the way of life of a vegan healthy eating and not a temporary diet.

Next Class: TBD | Prerequisite: Classes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

Class 3: Getting in Gear

You are now embarking on the second week of the Kickstart. We will share our great results: increased energy, weight loss, clearer skin. Discuss what works the best and share challenges: decreased energy, gas, frequent hunger. Further discussion will be had on experiencing a “detox” phase that will pass and lead to much better days.

Next Class: TBD | Prerequisite: Classes 1 and 2

Class 5: Keys for Natural Appetite Control

You are now wrapping up your three-week journey on a vegan diet. During this class you will learn techniques for controlling your appetite.

Next Class: TBD | Prerequisite: Classes 1, 2, 3 and 4

Class 7: Healthy Blood Pressure

The World Health Organization says hypertension (high blood pressure) is “the most important preventable cause of premature death in developed countries.” The good news is that blood pressure changes happen quickly, and plant-based diets will help lower high blood pressure within a short time frame. Learn more by joining this class.

Next Class: TBD | Prerequisite: Classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6
